Draft: this guide describes a feature customers can't use yet, so production leaves it out.
Channels, and who can change them
Talk with your team beside your customers’ threads, see who’s in a channel, and rename, archive or leave one.
Channels are where your team talks among itself, under Channels in the sidebar. Every team starts with #general. An open channel is the whole team’s; a private one, with a lock, is only for the people in it.
To talk with one teammate, send them a direct message instead.
Make a channel
- Choose New channel under the channels in the sidebar.
- Give it a name. It’s written in lower case with hyphens, and the box shows what it will become.
- Turn on Private to pick who’s in it, then choose Create channel.
Anyone on the team can make a channel.
See who’s in it
In a channel, the faces and the number at the top right show who’s in it. Choose them to open People: everyone in the channel, who started it, and their role. An open channel lists your whole team, since everyone is in it.
In a private channel, anyone in it can choose Add people. They’ll see everything said in it so far.
Channel settings
Choose the channel’s name at the top, or Channel settings in its menu, to open About: its name, what it’s for, and who started it.
Right-click a channel in the sidebar, or choose ⋯ beside it, for its menu: Mark as read, Copy link, Channel settings, Who’s in it (Everyone in it for an open channel), and the ways out below.
Who can change a channel
- Whoever started it can rename it, change what it’s for, take people out of it and archive it.
- Owners and admins can do the same to any channel they can see. A private channel they aren’t in stays private from them too.
- Everyone else sees the settings but can’t change them, and the channel’s menu leaves out what they can’t do.
Leave or archive
- Leave channel takes a private channel out of your sidebar. Someone still in it can add you back. If you’re the last one in it, leaving archives it.
- Archive channel takes it out of everyone’s sidebar and stops new messages. Nothing is deleted: what was said stays, under Archived at the foot of your channels, and whoever may archive it can choose Bring it back.
To take someone out of a private channel, open People, then right-click them or choose ⋯ beside them, and choose Remove from #leads (or whichever channel it is). Only whoever started the channel, or an owner or admin, can.
